Wallpaper* Handmade 2016 Opening Party Press Release

CoveringsETC present the collaborative piece from French-Swiss industrial designer Julie Richoz during Wallpaper* Magazine's annual Handmade Exhibit during Salone del Mobile in Milano last week.

Wallpaper* Magazine, the world’s leading authority on design, art, architecture and fashion, held it’s annual Handmade Exhibit during Salone del Mobile in Milano last week to huge applaud from designers, critics and press.  The opening launch party last Tuesday evening had an overstocked RSVP list that had to be closed a week prior to the event.  2,000 guests from the design world attended the opening party held at The Arcade in Milan.  The attendees included some of the design world’s sharpest creative minds.  They came to see the collaborative efforts of architects/designers/artists paired with brands to create an exclusive design piece.   And to sip champagne from the evenings sponsor, Perrier Jouet!

This year Wallpaper* Handmade centered around a Hotel, working with the theme of travel and hospitality.  Wallpaper* Magazine engaged designers and brands including David Chipperfield who designed a Butler Stand that was created by E15, Ron Arad designed glassware created by Nude, David Rockwell designed a Valet furniture collection created by Stellar Works, Beatrice Ong designed a Shoe Tree created by Jointed + Jointed and Philips Design designed a Moving Lights Wall created by Philips Lighting to name just a handful.

One of the largest installations of the show this year was the collaborative piece from French-Swiss industrial designer Julie Richoz and CoveringsETC.  Inspired by Bio-Glass, from CoveringsETC, Julie Richoz designed a 3 meter high by 4 meter long room divider made entirely from Bio-Glass.  A Future Friendly ™ product from CoveringsETC, Bio-Glass has a story in its creation as it is 100% recycled glass so the piece is a continuation of a life cycle that is in process of achieving Cradle to Cradle Gold certification (previously Silver).  The Bio-Glass Room Divider is engineered using 100% recycled float glass melted and layered into slabs, which were then cut into slats that are multi-directional.  Julie Richoz wanted to create a piece reminiscent of Alvar Aalto architecture and Mediterranean outside space dividers that provide shadow yet visibility.

Julie Richoz on her design,

‘The Bio-Glass material is most often used to cover walls or floor in architecture.  I took this opportunity to move away from use as a surface to create a freestanding architectural piece.  The design is based on a play of exposing and hiding, in a rhythmic, almost kinetic way and invites one to move around the Bio-Glass wall to discover it.’

Wallpaper* Magazine took inspiration from the design to suggest use not just as a room divider but also as a shelving unit so that the piece could be multi-purposeful.  CoveringsETC CEO, Jenny Lynn George, suggested it might be used for a shower wall, or as an outdoor backdrop piece where the natural light could shine through the glass making it translucent and truly show off the properties of the glass as well as creating artistic shadows.

A preview of Salone del Mobile will feature in the May issue of Wallpaper* Magazine and the August issue will be dedicated to celebrating the Handmade Hotel exhibition.
